I really like this picture, it speaks well for what’s going on.
Here men dressed in the uniform of Latvian SS-soldiers are teaching kids about the “pride of their nation”. The SS-volunteers (German Collaborators) are regarded as “freedom fighters” (link), and state-racist policies are at play in both the baltics, as well as in e.g. Ukraine. The Soviet Union oppressed the culture of these countries, and now they are free - we often hear. It’s arguably more to it than that when they start removing burial monuments for Russian Soldiers - and replace it with marches to honour nazi death squads (or when a huge minority of russians in these places are treated like second class citizens).
If I can’t escape getting information on the oppressive conditions a painter in China has to withstand, we sure as hell can have more information on (and media-concern, in this age) what’s going on and what’s being done in these countries.
